Rolling Tips and Filters Explained: Paper, Glass or Charcoal?
Share
Paper tips, glass tips and activated-charcoal filters are not interchangeable. A paper tip mainly gives a roll shape and stability, a glass tip provides a reusable mouthpiece, and a charcoal filter is designed to pass smoke through activated carbon. Your best choice depends on the structure, airflow, reusability and fit you want.
The term “filter tip” is often used loosely in South Africa, so it helps to separate what each accessory actually does. None of these options makes smoking risk-free.

Paper, glass and charcoal at a glance
| Type | Main job | Reusable? | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper tip | Shape, stability and a cleaner mouth end | No | Simple and inexpensive, but minimal filtration |
| Glass tip | Reusable mouthpiece and consistent shape | Yes | Needs cleaning and careful handling |
| Charcoal filter | Channels smoke through activated carbon | Normally no | More complex and diameter-sensitive |

What does a paper tip actually do?
A paper tip—also called a roach, crutch or garrick—creates a firm mouth end. Folding a small zig-zag or accordion in the centre helps prevent the opening from collapsing, while the outer wrap holds the cylinder shape.
Paper tips are light, disposable and easy to size. Perforations make repeatable folds easier: the Elements Rainbow Perforated Filter Tips contain 50 perforated tips per booklet, while Blazy Susan Perforated Filter Tips provide another ready-to-fold paper option.
Choose a paper tip when:
- You want a simple disposable structure
- You need to adjust the diameter by rolling tighter or looser
- You prefer a flat booklet format that travels easily
A paper tip should not be confused with a true filtration medium. Its main value is mechanical: shape, support and keeping loose material away from the mouth.

How are reusable glass tips different?
A glass tip is a rigid mouthpiece. It does not absorb moisture like paper, holds a fixed diameter and can be cleaned for reuse. Flat mouthpieces may feel more stable between the lips, while round versions retain a traditional cylindrical shape.
The RAW Glass Filter Tips are currently listed in both flat and round mouthpiece variants. Because the diameter is fixed, match the paper and roll size to the tip rather than forcing the glass into a roll that is too narrow.
Basic glass-tip care
- Allow the tip to cool completely.
- Remove loose residue with an appropriate small brush.
- Clean with a method suitable for borosilicate glass.
- Rinse thoroughly and let it dry before reuse.
- Inspect for chips or cracks; retire damaged glass.

What is an activated-charcoal rolling filter?
An activated-charcoal filter contains porous carbon granules held between end caps. Smoke passes through the internal media rather than through an open paper centre. The result can feel different in draw resistance and temperature, but it does not remove every harmful substance and does not make combustion safe.
OCB Activ Slim Activated Charcoal Filter Tips measure 6 × 27 mm and are intended for compatible slim hand-rolled setups. Their fixed diameter makes paper width and roll size more important than with a paper tip.
How to choose the right tip or filter
- For easy custom sizing: choose paper.
- For reuse and a fixed mouthpiece: choose glass and keep it clean.
- For activated-carbon media: choose a purpose-built charcoal filter, while keeping expectations realistic.
- For reliable fit: compare diameter with the paper and intended roll rather than choosing by brand alone.

Frequently asked questions
Is a paper tip the same as a filter?
Not exactly. A paper tip mainly adds structure and keeps loose material away from the mouth; it is not designed to provide the same filtration as activated charcoal.
Can glass rolling tips be reused?
Yes. Clean, rinse and dry them thoroughly between uses, and stop using any tip that is chipped or cracked.
Do charcoal filters remove all harmful substances?
No. Activated-charcoal filters do not make smoke safe and should not be described as eliminating all harmful substances.
Why does tip diameter matter?
Diameter affects fit, airflow, structure and the finished roll. The tip should suit the paper width and intended roll size.
