What Does Bong Water Actually Filter?

A bong sends smoke through water before it reaches the mouthpiece. That clearly changes the smoke—but “changed” and “safe” are not the same thing. Water cools the smoke, catches ash and some droplets or particles, and may dissolve a portion of certain water-soluble compounds. It does not remove combustion, carbon monoxide or all of the irritating and harmful chemicals produced when plant material burns.

What happens when smoke bubbles through water?

When the user draws, pressure pulls smoke down the stem and through one or more openings below the waterline. The smoke breaks into bubbles. At each bubble’s surface, heat and chemicals can move between the smoke and the water before the bubble bursts into the chamber.

Four processes happen at the same time:

  1. Cooling: Hot smoke transfers some heat to the water and glass.

But resistance also increases, and the chemistry of each smoke compound determines whether it remains in the gas, dissolves in water or deposits on glass.

Brown water proves that some material was captured; it does not reveal what remained in the smoke. Small amounts of strongly coloured residue can make water look dramatic.

“Ice makes the smoke safe.”

Ice cools smoke. It does not stop combustion or reliably eliminate its gases and particles.

“More percolators remove all tar.”
