Common Reasons Seeds Don’t Germinate
Germination is a delicate process, even for seasoned growers. From seed vigor to shell composition, multiple factors impact each seed's ability to sprout.
Here are some typical reasons seeds may fail to germinate:
Incorrect Moisture Levels
One of the most frequent issues is incorrect moisture. Seeds that soak too long can drown, while over-watering can stunt growth. An overly wet or dry medium can be harmful to sprouting seeds.
Improper Temperatures
Ideal germination temperatures are between 20°C and 25°C. Too much heat can halt germination, while cold can lead to fungal growth. Consistency within this range is key.
Seed Depth Issues
Planting depth matters. Seeds placed too shallow risk root exposure to light, while those too deep can struggle to break the surface. Aim for a depth between 0.5-0.7cm.
Aging or Poorly Stored Seeds
Older or improperly stored seeds often exhibit reduced germination. At Skyline Seed Bank, we prioritize fresh stock, storing seeds in refrigerators in dark, sealed containers for maximum viability.

Our Commitment to Improving Germination Rates
Skyline Seed Bank has proudly served thousands of customers with high germination success rates. We follow strict practices to enhance seed quality:
- Fresh Stock: We keep a limited number of seeds on hand, ordering fresh stock only upon customer purchase.
- Critical Storage of all Seeds: all seeds are stored in optimal conditions to preserve viability.
- Discounting Aged Stock: Older seeds are sold at reduced prices to encourage timely use.
Despite these efforts, seed viability can vary based on how they were stored by breeders and suppliers. This is why we partner with trusted global suppliers who prioritize quality.
