Smokey at the grow Shop workbench for BUYING COCO COIR READ THE BAG

Buying Coco Coir: Washed, Buffered, Perlite Mix or Compressed Block?

Choose coco by three separate details: whether it is washed and buffered, what the blend contains, and how much usable medium the pack supplies. A compressed block describes its format; “70/30” describes a blend; “buffered” describes processing. None of those labels automatically means fertiliser has been added.

For container herbs, vegetables and other horticultural plants, those details help you compare bags fairly before building a watering or nutrient routine. This is a purchasing guide, rather than another full growing schedule.

Read washed, buffered and fertilised as separate claims

Washing helps remove soluble salts. Buffering conditions coco’s exchange behaviour, which affects how it holds and releases nutrients. They are related processing steps, but one word does not prove the other has been completed. CANNA’s technical explanation of coco distinguishes washing from buffering and explains the calcium, magnesium and potassium relationship.

Pre-fertilised is a separate nutrition statement. For example, Atami Washed & Buffered Cocos 50L is listed with no added fertiliser. Atami’s manufacturer page also identifies it as 100% processed coco with no fertiliser and EC below 0.3.

The Washed Coco Peat Block 5kg listing calls the product washed and states 100% coco peat. It does not establish a buffered claim. If buffering status matters to your planned system, confirm it rather than assuming every compressed block has the same preparation.

Ask four questions: What processing is stated? Is fertiliser added? What are the ingredients? What preparation does this exact product require? Avoid adding a blanket preparation step to every product when the manufacturer gives different instructions.

Choose the blend before the biggest bag

Skyline 100L Coco-Perlite Mixes currently has five live options: 100% coco, 90/10, 70/30, 60/40 and 50/50. The ratios are coco to perlite. The listing describes the coco as washed, buffered and flushed to EC below 0.5.

Label What it identifies Buying implication
100% coco No perlite in the stated composition Choose it if your planned medium is coco without a perlite blend
90/10 90% coco / 10% perlite A smaller stated perlite proportion
70/30 70% coco / 30% perlite A commonly specified coco-perlite blend; confirm it suits your system
60/40 or 50/50 Increasing stated perlite proportion Do not assume the same watering behaviour as a coco-only medium

Horticultural perlite is also available separately in 1L and 5L sizes for appropriate blending jobs. It contributes physical structure, not a complete nutrient programme. Follow handling guidance, reduce airborne dust and avoid breathing it.

A ratio alone cannot predict a fixed watering interval. Particle grade, container shape, compaction, plant size and environment also affect the result. Choose the blend for the intended horticultural system, not because more white particles look more advanced.

Compare expanded litres, preparation and delivery cost

Current option Stated retail quantity Format or preparation distinction Price at check
Washed coco block 5kg; approximately 70L expanded Compressed; needs hydration and space for expansion R160
Atami Washed & Buffered Cocos 50L Bagged 100% coco; no added fertiliser stated R300
Skyline coco-perlite mixes 100L in the selected blend Ready-blended; select the ratio R450–R475 across variants
Separate perlite 1L or 5L A blend component, not a bag of coco R10 / R50 respectively

These products showed available variants on 2 November 2026. Prices may change. A 5kg block is a weight before hydration, not a five-litre bag. Its approximate expanded volume should not be treated as a guaranteed packed pot volume under every handling method.

Compare the full job: material, preparation time, water, storage space and delivery. The block, Atami bag and Skyline 100L listing carry exclusions from free shipping; the perlite listing excludes orders over 2L from free shipping. Make a short specification list before ordering

  • Application: record the crop and container or irrigation system you are buying for.
  • Processing: require an explicit washed/buffered statement if that is part of the plan.
  • Nutrition: record whether fertiliser is included; do not infer it from “ready-to-use.”
  • Blend: write coco and perlite in the correct order.
  • Quantity: compare expanded litres and pot-fill needs, allowing for practical variation.

Keep a little consistency when expanding a setup: changing the coco grade, blend ratio and container design together can make later comparisons difficult. A new bag with a different label deserves a fresh specification check rather than automatic treatment as the same medium.

Browse Grow Mediums for current options. If you still need to decide between broad medium types, read the growing-medium guide. For interpreting a measurement, use Understanding pH alongside the meter and media instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Does washed coco automatically mean buffered coco?

No. Look for the separate buffered statement or ask for clarification.

Does buffered coco contain a complete fertiliser programme?

Not necessarily. Atami’s Washed & Buffered Cocos is explicitly listed without added fertiliser.

Is a compressed block always a different ingredient from bagged coco?

Compressed describes the format. Compare the actual composition and processing statements to identify other differences.

Does 70/30 mean 70% perlite?

For the Skyline coco-perlite listing, it means 70% coco and 30% perlite.

Will a 100L bag fill every set of nominally 100L pots exactly?

Do not assume an exact match. Filling, compaction and container-volume conventions can affect practical use.
